● Definition of the terms :-

Oxidation : Oxidation is the process of adding oxygen to a substance (in terms of oxygen transfer) / Oxidation is the process of removal of hydrogen from a substance (in terms of hydrogen transfer).

Reduction : Reduction is the process of removal of oxygen from a substance (in terms of oxygen transfer) / Reduction is the process of adding hydrogen to a substance (in terms of hydrogen transfer).

Oxidising agent : A substance which helps in the oxidation of another substance is called an oxidising agent (applicable to both cases - adding of oxygen & removal of hydrogen).

Reduction agent : A substance which helps in the reduction of another substance is called a reduction agent (applicable to both cases - removal of oxygen & adding of hydrogen).
