The number is 8

Given :

The amount of cocoa powder added in the recipe =  \frac{1}{4}

The amount of butter added in the recipe =  \frac{3}{4}

If the same number is added to both the numerator and denominator of the amount of cocoa powder the result is equivalent to the amount of butter.

Solution :

Let the number be x

Its given that if we added the number on numerator and denominator of the cocoa power then the amount is equal to amount of butter. hence the equation will be alike

 \frac{1 + x}{4 + x}  =  \frac{3}{4}

4(1 + x) = 3(4 + x)

4 + 4x = 12 + 3x

4x - 3x = 12 - 4

x = 8
