The container became hot without any heating because the quick lime get dissolved in the water to produce Carbon dioxide.

This reaction is decomposition and exothermic reaction.

CaCo3------CaO(s)+CO2(g)

(by heating)

The chemical reaction between quick lime and water forms slaked lime.This reaction is accompanied by a change in temperature.

Equation:

Calcium oxide + Water --> Calcium Hydroxide

That is, Quick lime + Water --> Slaked lime

-> CaO(s)+ H2O(l) → Ca(OH)2(aq)+Heat

The product formed is Slaked lime or Calcium hydroxide.

When applied on walls,it reacts slowly with the carbon dioxide gas in the air to form a thin layer of calcium carbonate on the walls.It gives a shiny finish to the walls.

Equation:

Calcium hydroxide + Carbon dioxide --> Calcium carbonate

->Ca(OH)2 + CO2 → CaCO3 + H2O

Hope this helps...!
