We are given a quadratic equation whose roots are equal so we need to find the value of k in the quadratic equation.

x² + kx + k = 0

Comparing the given quadratic equation with the standard form of quadratic equation i.e., ax² + bx + c = 0 , we get

  • a = 1
  • b = k
  • c = k

The roots of a quadratic equation is equal only when the discriminant is 0.

b² - 4ac = 0

⇒ k² - 4k = 0

⇒ k - 4 = 0

k = 4

Hence ,

  • Value of k is = 4

−4(1)(k)=0

=k

−4k=0

=k(k−4)=0

∴ k = 0 or k = 4
