Around 80 percent of Sudan’s population is employed in the agricultural sector. Sudan’s farmers cultivate crops through both rain-fed agriculture and irrigation; the primary crops are sorghum, wheat, cotton, millet, groundnuts and sesame. In the livestock sector, Sudanese farmers cultivate both cattle and sheep: Most cattle are of two types, Baqqara and Nilotic, while the so-called "desert sheep" is popular among people living at higher elevations. Traditionally, farmers sustained their herds by migrating to follow the rains, but droughts during the 1980s devastated the livestock industry and forced many migrant farmers to abandon the land and move to urban areas. The sector has recovered since then, and by 2005, more than 38 million cattle and 90 million sheep and goats were being kept in the country.
