Concept

The sum of the two rational numbers is calculated by taking the LCM of the denominators.  We will first calculate the sum of the two sets of numbers and then compare it with 1/2 to check which one lies near 1/2.

Given

The first sum = 2/15 + 1/3

The second sum = 6/7 - 1/3

1/2

Find

We have to find out that which number is near 1/2 after the summation of the two sets of the numbers.

Solution

The first summation = 2/15 + 1/3

= (2 + 5)/ 15

= 7/15

=0.47

The second summation = 6/7 - 1/3

= (18 - 7)/21

= 11/21

= 0.52

Since 1/2 = 0.5

Therefore from the above calculation it is clear that the difference between the first summation from 0.5 is more than the difference between the second summation and 0.5. Therefore the second summation is closer to the 1/2.

Hence the sum 6/7 - 1/3 is closer to 1/2.
