a. The hermit is the speaker.

b. A bearded man who had a deep wound (from the stab of  a knife) in his stomach was coming.

c. He came running because he somehow escaped from the Tsar's bodyguard, who otherwise would have killed him.

Explanation:

  • The above extract is taken from the lesson Three Questions by Leo Tolstoy
  • The bearded was the rival of the Tzar, who swore to take vengeance from the Tzar, as the Tzar executed his brother and seized his property. The bearded man he knew the Tzar was to come to the forest to meet the hermit and so he had made up his mind to kill the Tzar when he was on his way back home. But as the day passed and the Tzar had not returned, the bearded man left his hiding-place instead of finding the Tzar, he encountered Tzar's bodyguard who recognised him and wounded him.
  • The bearded man was badly wounded, and  holding hands pressed against his stomach he ran towards the hermit's hut. As soon as he reached the hermit's hut, he felt fainting on the ground moaning feebly
  • The wounded man was received with sympathy at the hermit's cottage. He was nursed with great care by the Tzar and the hermit. Both the hermit and the Tzar did their best to stop the blood flow by washing and bandaging the wound repeatedly, and eventually  the  blood stopped flowing and the bearded man was saved.
