A 44-YEAR-OLD Vadodara resident, who has been accused of uploading obscene photographs of a Mumbai-based 17-year-old girl, was arrested on Thursday, months after he posted a condolence message on Facebook on the passing away of his father.

A team from the Ghatkopar police, which was looking for Hetal Modi, reached the spot where a condolence meet was organised a few months ago, and tracked down the accused from his residence in Vadodara. Modi was arrested on Thursday and has been remanded in police custody for seven days.

The teenager had approached the police in September with a complaint. She claimed to have met Modi in 2017 at the Borivali railway station when he was on his way to Gujarat. “She said that they exchanged numbers and remained in touch… the duo would meet when he came to the city. Modi recently got a job as a driver in Qatar and was working there for six months. He asked the girl to send him some photographs of herself, which she did,” said Inspector Vilas Datir.

When the girl’s elder brother saw her sending photographs to the man, he asked her to block the number. Modi, angry that the girl had stopped responding to him, allegedly created a Facebook account in her name.

“He then morphed her photographs and also included her brother’s pictures in them. He then posted defamatory content on Facebook, threatening that he will now ‘make the photograph viral’. Following this, the girl approached us,” Datir said.

An FIR was registered on charges of defamation, intimidation under the IPC and sections of the Information Technology Act. During investigation by Inspector D Girap and Constable Santosh Gidh, the police found that the person resided in Gujarat.

“As we were looking for his address, we came across a post he had uploaded three months ago where he spoke about a condolence meet for his father. We visited the spot where the condolence meet was held in Vadodara and got his address. We found his residence but he was away in Qatar for work,” an officer said.

Earlier this week, the police received information that he had returned to Vadodara. Following this, a police team reached his residence and arrested him with the help of local police.
