Vertebrates have chambered heart. In lower vertebrates the Chambers are incompletely separated whereas in higher vertebrates like mammals the Chambers are completely separated.

Complete separation of chamber enables double circulation thereby inhibiting mixing of oxygenated and deoxygenated blood.

The higher vertebrates have evolved in such a way that their Chambers are separate and their circulation is distinct.
