Nalanda University is Located in the town of Rajgir, in the northern Indian state of Bihar.
The site is located about 95 kilometres southeast of Patna .
Nalanda University is also a UNESCO world heritage site.
Historical sources indicate that the University had a long and illustrious life which lasted almost continually for 800 years from the fifth to the twelfth century CE.

Nalanda university was probably set up during the reign of the Kumargupta I in the 5th Century A.D.It is situated near the Rajgriha in Bihar. It was called the Oxford of Mahayanism.
Features of the Nalanda University---
@--- It was spreaded over in the larger area almost about 14 Hectares.
@--- The university has at least eight colleges made by the different patron kings like Balaputradeva, the ruler of Srivijaya(Sumatra).
@---There are about 1500 Professors and 10,000 Student.
@--- Three great libraries catered to the teachers and the students are also made.
From the archaeological and written resources, it is found that the admissions in the Nalanda university was very difficult. Also Students have to appeared for the Entrance Examinations.
Students and Scholars from various parts of the India and the Buddhist countries of the Mongolia, Korea, Japan, China,Tibet, Ceylon, etc; came to study in this renowned residential university.
Nalanda scholars went to various parts of the Buddhist World to spread the principles of the Buddhism. They includes Padma Sambhava, Buddhakirti, etc.
No Fees was charged. The scholars and Students enjoyed free boarding and lodgings.
Kings and Rich Merchants used to denote For the maintenance of the University.
The university not only taught Mahayana, Buddhism but also, grammar, Vedas, Logic, medicine, Philosophy, astronomy, etc.
The methods of teachings was through Debates and Discussions.
Some Famous Scholars like Chanakya, Panini,Jivaka Hiuen Tsang were the Students of the Nalanda University.
The university Functioned as a corporative body for about 7 centuries.It had its Own Seal of Authority.
It met its end in the Hands of Muhammad bin Bakhtiyar Khiliji, a general of Muhammad Ghori towards the end of 12th century A.D.
Note--- The university does not exist at present. The information about this, had been studied and recognized by the archaeologists through the archaeological and literary sources.
