It is a prestigious venture taken up by the Government of Telangana, Indian Railways and private organizations. The model of operation is called PPP (Public Private Participation). The name of the operator is “Hyderabad Metro Rail Ltd.” or HMRL.
Hyderabad Metro was inaugurated by Prime Minister Sri Narendra Modi on the 28 Nov, 2017. At present only two lines are operational between Miyapur to Nagole with 22 intermediate stations. It is a 30 km stretch. A total of 66.5 km long lines are planned on 3 routes. A total of 64 stations are planned. Then a further 97 km lines will be also laid in the next phase in future. There are two tracks on each line, for to and fro journeys. The technical specifications are that they are electrical trains using a 25 kV AC lines overhead.
A very big Indian construction company called L & T built the lines. The company is called L & T Metro Rail Hyderabad Ltd, or (LTMRHL). The engines and coaches are imported from Korea. There is a Mascot for HMRL; it is called Niz. There are three lines colored Red, Green and Blue. The Red line goes from Miyapur to L.B. Nagar, a stretch of about 30 km. The Green line is between Jubilee Bus station in Secunderabad to Mahatma Gandhi Bus Station in Hyderabad, a stretch of 10 km. Then finally the third line is between Nagole and Shilparamam, measuring about 27 km.
The company LTMRHL started the construction in 2012. The project was delayed and the expenditures were revised upwards to about 18 thousand crores. The rolling stock (trains/coaches) are supplied by the South Korean company Hyundai Rotem. About 50 trains with about 170 cars (coaches) are planned to be running on all the lines planned. The width of the trains is 3.2 m and their height is about 4 metres. The metro is constructed at a big height of 10m above roads on wide and strong single pillars.
