Roasting is the process in which used at the time of extraction of a metal from its sulfide ore. In this process, adequate amount of oxygen is supplied. This results in the formation of metal oxide with release of sulfur dioxide gas.

Calcination is the process which is used at the time of extraction of a metal from its carbonate ore. In this process, limited amount of oxygen is supplied. This results in the formation of metal oxide with the release of carbon dioxide gas.
