the current population of India contributes to 17% of the global population. also,all these people are unevenly distributed across 3.28 million square kilometre of our geographical area. according to the 2001 census,Uttar Pradesh is the highest populated state in India with a total number of 166 million people.

As we know ,prior to independence , the country was divided into British India and princely states , which owed their allegiance the crown . British India consists of 11 provinces and 6 other territories. Princely states numbered 500p at the time of Independence changed the political geography of the India and some parts went to newly created state Pakistan. But gradually , princely states managed the Indian union , requiring a fresh divisions of them into states.

The new states and union territories numbered 29 and classified into A,B,C states and D territories. In 1956, the states were reorganised , abolishing various distinction groups only as states and union territories. These are new grouped into the Northern, Eastern, western and southern.
