So researched a bit. It seems in cricket, average is only calculated for innings where a batsmen has been out and not for all innings he has played......(This knowledge should be present and if it's not given then the question is faulty.)

So here we go.
Total no. innings = X
No. of times not out = N
No. of times out = X-N

Therefore Average is :

A = R/(X-N)
Thus

N = X - (R/A). (Answer 1)

Now onto second question it's just substitution of values..

R = 204
X = 15
A = 17

N = 15 - (204/17)
N = 15 - 12
N = 3
