• The Bastille was a fortress used as a prison by the king of France.
• It was stormed on 14 July 1789 by the people where they hoped to find hoarded ammunition.
• The commander of the prison was killed and the seven prisoners inside were all released.
• The fortress was completely demolished by people .
• The Bastille represented the despotic power of king and was the focus on much resentment ..

● They were the third estate. Dispossessed and irrelevant to French politics for centuries.
● The mass of all others were lumped in the third estate - this would include merchants and lawyers and many well off. They wanted a real voice.
● Famine cycles and the American Revolution left the French crown broke and in need of new taxes.
● When the Bastille fell the king was out of touch with reality - asking is this rebellion? He was told no your majesty, it’s revolution
