Floridean starch or cynophycean starch is a type of a storage glucan found in glaucopytes and in red algae (also known as rhodophytes), in which it is usually the primary sink for fixed carbon from photosynthesis. It is found in grains or granules in the cell's cytoplasm and is composed of an a-linked glucose polmer with a degree of branching intermediate between amylopetin and glycoem, though more similar to the former. The polymers that make up floridean starch are sometimes referred to as "semi-amylopectin"
Starch or amylum is a polymeric carbohydrate consisting of a large number of glucose units joined by glycosidic bonds. This polysaccharide is produced by most green plants as energy storage. It is the most common carbohydrate in human diets and is contained in large amounts in staple foods like potatoes, wheat, maize (corn), rice, and casava.

Floridian starch is a granular carbohydrate reserve present in red algae. It serves as energy storage material in red algae. Floridian starchhas more resemblance with glycogen than starch. The true starch is stored inside plastids of the cell whereas the Floridian starch is not stored inside plastids
