ANSWER

  • Soil is also known as the skin of the earth.
  • Soil is formed from the breakdown of rocks.
  • Wind, water, fire and a lot of other factors crack rocks.
  • These cracks lead to the breaking up of huge rocks into smaller pieces known as sediments.
  • This process is known as weathering.
  • The organic matter (Sediments) decay and mixes with the rock fragments, minerals, and water to form soil.

How is soil formed?

Over thousands of years ,the smaller pieces of rocks which had came out after volcanic eruptions roll down with the flowing water or wind and strike against each other and formed very fine particles under combined effect of water, wind, roots of plants and mechanical collisions.

These fine particles get mixed up with organic matter to form Soil.

  • Soil is the uppermost layer of the earth's crust.

  • The process of breaking down of bigger rocks into smaller by the action of natural forces, such as water, air, plant roots etc is called Weathering.

  • Formation of soil is a very slow process.

  • It takes hundred of years to produce a few centimetres of soil.
