X + Bromine water -----------> Decolourises bromine water

Bromine water is the characteristic test of alkenes. So, X is an alkene.

X + HCl ------------------> Y

Molecular weight of Y = 64.5

So, CH2=CH2 (X) + HCl ---------> CH3-CH2-Cl (Y)

So, Compound X = Ethene - CH2=CH2

Compound Y = Ethyl chloride ( Chloroethane) - CH3-CH2-Cl
