here's the explanation..

given :-

1 + 4 = 5
2 + 5 = 12
3 + 6 = 21
11 + 8 = ?

first add 5 to "2 + 5" we get = 7 + 5 = 12

add 12 to "3 + 6" = 12 + 9 = 21

similarly, we have to add 21 to "11 + 8".

and we get = 11 + 8 + 21

= 19 + 21

= 40 ;)

the trick we used here is simply adding the result to the sum of numbers in the next line.
