★ How have we transformed the given sentences?
Let's take the topic in common! To change an assertive sentence to a negative sentence, we have to just add "not" after the auxiliary verb in the sentence. For example:
- Mom is discussing with Joe.
- Mom is isn't (is not) discussing with Joe.
Some sentences don't express the auxiliary verb directly. In such case, we have to use the suitable auxiliary verb from 'do'- form of verbs (i.e., do, does and did), according to the pronoun (subject) and tense. Then, add "not" after it. The main verb has to be written in present form (verb 1). For example:
- Minnie sings songs.
- Minnie doesn't sing songs. (Minnie refers the pronoun 'she', so 'does' has been used)
Here you go with other examples!
- They write a letter.
- They don't write a letter. (The auxiliary verb 'do' has to be used with the pronoun 'they')
- Dad went to the association.
- Dad didn't go to the association. (Since the tense of the verb is past, 'did' has been used?
Now let us know how to change an assertive sentence to an interrogative sentence! To change this also, we need the same knowledge which is required to change an assertive sentence to a negative sentence, i.e., using suitable auxiliary verb if it is expressed indirectly in a sentence. Only two things are to be noted here, that are, the auxiliary verb should be written first along with the contracted form of 'not' preceding the subject and a question mark should be added at the end of the sentence.
Here are some examples!
- Mickey plays cricket.
- Doesn't Mickey play cricket?
- We joined Hina's team.
- Didn't we join Hina's team?
- You need a book.
- Don't you need a book?
If the sentence contains auxiliary verb, then we change it like this:
- They were enjoying the trip.
- Weren't they enjoying the trip?
