What makes you think it is? Sure, fantasy has had a big resurgence over the last number of years with Lord Of The Rings, The Hobbit and Game Of Thrones but before these epic films/shows came about, Fantasy wasn't that big with mainstream audiences. Sci-Fi movies and TV shows on the other hand have been popular for years.

With regards to books, I'd put the two genres at 50-50. Fantasy definitely has more popularity in books than it does on the big screen but I'd put a lot of that down to the fact that it is very difficult to create the Worlds of fantasy for TV or movies and production companies are less willing to pump money into something that might bomb. The LOTRs movies were a big risk when they were being made into movies because nothing that ambitious had been done for fantasy before.

Sci-Fi has been established for years on the big screen with the Star Trek and Star Wars franchises and have huge popularity. I would argue that Fantasy and Sci-Fi both have huge followings and one isn't more popular than the other.

I'd also be interested in why you think this is the case!!

I have copied this answer as I found it a great example to solve your question..
