Hey guys, please help me here: Which one of the following sets of quantum numbers is possible ? (a) n = 3, l = 3, ml = –3, ms = +1/2 (b) n = 2, l = 1, ml = 2, ms = +1/2 (c) n = 2, l = 0, ml = 0, ms = +1/2 (d) n = 1, l = 0, ml = 0, ms = 0 (e) n = 3, l = 2, ml = 3, ms = –1/2

Answer:

c is only possible

Explanation:

[a] here the set of quantum numbers belong to 3f subshell but it does not exists

[b] here ml > l  but ml should always be less than or equal to l

[d] here ms = 0 quantum number would either be +1/2 or -1/2 but not 0

[e]  here ml > l  but ml should always be less than or equal to l
