Hey guys, please help me with this small doubt. How can we determine the molecular formula for compounds from the name of the compound.. i.e. we know the elements of the compound and we need to know the molecular formula for it.? I know we can know it from the valency of the compound but take this example, the molecular formula for beryllium carbide is B2C but if I consider their valencies, valency of B-2 and C-4 according to which the formula should be B4C2.
please explain.

okay... but I don't get it why it's not Be4C2 according to crossing the valency. Why do we divide it?

write them as
element beryllium carbon
valency 2 4
now divide their valencies
element beryllium carbon
valency 1 2
now cross multiply the valencies
hence the formula B2C
element beryllium carbon
valency 2 4
now divide their valencies
element beryllium carbon
valency 1 2
now cross multiply the valencies
hence the formula B2C
