Here's your answer...

Let the number of humans be x and number of horses be y.
Since each horse and human has one head each, x+y = 74
Since each human has 2 legs and each horse has 4 legs, 2x+4y = 196
x+2y = 98
x+y = 74
_______
y = 24
x = 50

So there were 50 humans and 24 horses (assuming no one has an extra leg or head or something :-P)

horses=24
humans=50
total legs=
(24 \times 4) + (50 \times 2)

=
