why is voltmeter always connected in parallel across the two points between which the potential difference is to be measured?

Voltmeter provides very high resistance .
When voltmeter connected in parallel,no current flows through it due to the high resistance.Voltage drop occurs which is measured by the voltmeter.
Now if it is connected in series..then due to high resistance no current will flow through circuit..so no voltage drop occurs. Voltage in same line is zero..its indicates zero.
