Theorem : In a right triangle, the square of the hypotenuse is equal to the sum of the squares of the other two sides.

Let ABC be a right angle triangle , right angled at B.

Construction : Draw perpendicular BD from B on AC.

Proof :

Triangle ADB ~ ABC,

==> AB/AC = AD/AB

==> AB^2 = AC . AD ------(i)

Triangle BDC ~ ABC,

==> BC/AC = CD/BC

==> BC^2 = AC . CD ------(ii)

Adding (i) & (ii) , we get

AB^2 + BC^2 = AC ( AD + CD )

AB^2 + BC^2 = AC^2 [AD + CD = AC]

PROVED.
