In 1757, the British attacked Murshidabad, the capital of the emperor of Bengal, Shiraj-ud-Dullah in the Battle of Plassey, following the attack of Calcutta by the emperor himself. With betrayals from Shiraj's prime minister, Mirzafar, the British were able to defeat Shiraj and execute him. Mirzafar was made the puppet ruler of Bengal and the British Raj was established in India by Robert Clive.
