Consider the situation shown in the below figure.



As we know the moment of inertia of the circular disc of mass m and radius R about its own axis passing from the centre and perpendicular to the plane is.

I cm= 1/2mR²

So, the moment of inertia of the disc about the axis passing through its edge and perpendicular to its plane can be calculated by using parallel axis theorem.

 I = Icm + md²
=1/2mR² + mR²
=3/2mR²
