The aufbau principle states that in the ground state of an atom or ion, electrons fill atomic orbitals of the lowest available energy levels before occupying higher levels.

AUFBAU PRINCIPLE = orbitals are filled in the order of increasing energy.

Two general rules help us to predict electronic configuration. 1. Electrons are assigned to orbitals in order of increasing value of ( n + l).

2. For sub shells with the same value of (n+ l) , are assigned first to the sub shell with lower 'n'.

ASCENDING ORDER OF ENERGIES OF VARIOUS ATOMIC ORBITALS IS GIVEN BELOW:

1s < 2s < 2p < 3s < 3p < 4s < 3d < 4p < 5s < 4d < 5p < 6s < 4f < 5d < 6p < 7s < 5f < 6d< 7p < 8s.... .
