South West monsoon winds are responsible for rainfall in malabar coast

The Malabar Coast is a long, narrow coastline on the southwestern shore line of the mainland Indian subcontinent. Geographically, it comprises the wettest regions of southern India, as the Western Ghats intercept the moisture-laden monsoon rains, especially on their westward-facing mountain slopes

  • Rain in India is brought by South West Monsoon which is originally South east trade winds which is deflected towards the low pressure over the Northern India.
  • This deflected winds travel across the Indian ocean and capture the moisture and march towards the North Indian low pressure.
  • Then the wind get divided into Arabian sea branch and Bay of Bengal branch.
  • The Arabian sea branch of the South west monsoon accounts for the rain in Malabar coast (Kerala) in the 1st week of June.
  • Simultaneously, the Bay of Bengal branch accounts for the rainfall in North east in the 1st week of June.
