⏪Soil Degradation is caused by the following factors :

↪Deforestation : Cutting down of trees on a large scale makes soil vulnerable to Erosion which further reduces its fertility and adversely affects its quality .

↪Over Irrigation : Though Irrigation of crops is necessary, irrigation more than required can be dangerous . It makes the soil highly alkaline and poor in basic nutrients .

↪Mining : the Process of Mining releases harmful substances. These prevent proper aeration of soil . Thus, the soil is deprived of basic nourishment.

↪Over Grazing : over grazing by animals exposes the soil to agents like wind rain etc thereby making it vulnerable to Erosion.

⏪Conservation of Soil :

↪Planting Trees on a large Scale [ Afforestation ]

↪Prevent Over grazing

↪Terrace Farming , ploughing along contour lines , Building Shelter belts .

↪Careful or Reduced Mining .

↪Proper Irrigation .

Causes of Soil Degradation and Methods for Soil Conservation

Major causes of soil degradation

  • Soil erosion
  • Decline of soil fertility
  • Water logging
  • Salinity
  • Shifting cultivation

Soil erosion

  • Water is considered as the main cause of soil erosion.
  • Main agents of soil erosion are (1) Water, (2) Wind, (3) Waves and (4) Glaciers
  • Removal of the top layer of soil by various means, which include both natural events and human activities, is called as soil erosion.

Soil conservation methods

  • Afforestation.
  • Contour ploughing (cultivation against the direction of the wind).
  • Strip cultivation (cultivation in strips).
  • Flood control by government initiatives.
  • Reclamation of bad lands.
  • Wind breaks in land; like trees at borders.
  • Organic farming.
  • Control/restrict shifting cultivation.
  • Construction of proper drainage.
  • Leveling of gullies, ravines etc.
  • Control of chemical fertilizers and pesticides in the market.
  • Proper awareness about the need of conservation.

Hope uhh get it.
