because valency of magnesium is two .
Hence, when Mg react with O2 and exchange of electron takes place it forms Mg2O2.
We can write it with MgO.

HERE'S YOUR ANSWER

✒ Magnesium (Mg) reacts with oxygen by transfer of electrons . It's called ionic bond .
The valency of Mg is 2
Oxygen has also same valency of 2
since Mg is a metal it's plus +
and oxygen being non metal (-)
We write O2 , because it exists in diatonic form , i. e. by joining in co Velant bond .
