In order to live in a common environment decisions are needed to make our living environment peaceful and prospective. If there are no elections, perhaps the rulers will become dictators or bad kings. So periodic elections allow people to review their previous decisions. In order to make decisions it is not always possible to follow direct democracy. Reason is that we are a big society. So indirect democratic principles are necessary. So elections are important.
For conducting elections we need a powerful, independently functioning organization. It should have executive power to perform its duties in a pressure-free and honest manner. Elections should be held such that all parties involved are treated equally.
Elections happen to elect one among the representatives from different parties. The parties do campaign to inform the public about the welfare schemes that they will do later on after coming to power. They promise a lot of things. Political parties complain against each other usually.
The election commision gives a notification about the elections. Then the process ticks off. The candidates file their nominations. They are verified. Candidates have to file their property details too. Candidates have to follow the rules and guidelines set by the election commision.
Two days before the date of elections, the campaigning by candidates stops. The citizen go to polling booths on the day of election. Presiding officers conduct the polling in the selected polling booths. Voters cast their votes on ballot papers or by using the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs).
After a few days the counting of ballots takes place. The candidate with higher number of valid votes is declared elected by the election commision. The results are sent to the Governor or the President and to the media too.
