The easiest way to think of it is that pure maths is maths done for its own sake, while applied maths is maths with a practical use. ... Other examples of applied maths might be statistics or probability theory. Pure maths, on the other hand, is separate from the physical world.

Most simply expressed, pure mathematics is “math for the sake of math”. Whereas applied mathematics seeks an answer to some problem based upon mathematical principles. So that may not be very satisfying, let me provide some elementary examples. Topology is a very abstract mathematical topic that deals with how spaces; spaces here is even more abstract, think of them as almost geometric spaces; relate to one another. Think about how the a circle relates to a sphere or how the x-y plane relates to the x-y-z plane. Topologist study this as a form or pure mathematics but it can be applied to other areas of study. In fact, the Nobel Prize in physics for 2016 was awarded to gentlemen who used topology to study states of matter.

Hope this helps.
