Answer:

For a lens it is called refraction. Refraction is the change in the direction of light when passing from one transparent medium to another

Answer:

As light goes form air to lens, i.e. from one medium to another, refraction occurs. Since the index of refraction of the lens is greater than that of air, the ray moves towards the perpendicular as it enters, and away from the perpendicular as it leaves (this is in accordance with the law of refraction). Due to the lens's shape, light is thus bent toward the axis at both surfaces, changing its direction.

More to Know:

There are two main types of lenses, known as convex lens (or converging) and concave lens (or diverging).

Lenses that are thicker at their centers than at their edges are convex, while those that are thicker around their edges are concave lens. A light beam passing through a convex lens is focused by the lens on a point on the other side of the lens.
