A shopkeeper gives books on rent for getting. She takes a fixed charge for first two days, and an additional charge for each day thereafter. Latika paid 22 for a book kept for 6 days, while Anand paid 16 for the book kept for four days. Find the fixed charges and charge for each extra day.

Solution :

• Let fixed charge be M.

and

• Charge for each extra day be N.

» Latika paid 22 for a book kept for 6 days, while Anand paid 16 for the book kept for four days.

→ M + 4N = 22

→ M = 22 - 4N _________ (eq 1)

Also,

→ M + 2N = 16

→ (22 - 4N) + 2N = 16 [From (eq 1)]

→ 22 - 4N + 2N = 16

→ 22 - 2N = 16

→ - 2N = - 6

→ N = 3 (charge per extra day)

Put value of N in (eq 1)

→ M = 22 - 4(3)

→ M = 22 - 12

→ M = 10 (fixed charge)
