The first magnets were not invented, but rather were found from a naturally occurring mineral called magnetite. Traditionally, the ancient Greeks werethe discoverers of magnetite. There is a story about a shepherd named Magnes whose shoe nails stuck to a rock containing magnetite.

A shepherd in Magnesia was having stick with metal tip when he brought his stick near a rock then his stick was attracted by the rock.... In this way magnet was discovered......and one thing that stone is called loadstone which are naturally occurring magnets.
