The reign of terror was started by Robespierre . it is the period in the French revolution after the first French republic was established . It is known as the reign of terror because during this period there were 16,594 official death sentences in France 2,639 of this were in Paris. This period was between June 1793 till the end of July 1794. its purpose was to purge France enemies of the revolution and protect the country from foreign invaders.
