The mass of an object on the surface of the earth is 900 kg. Calculate the weight of the object on the surface of the earth and moon. The value of acceleration due to gravity on the earth's surface is 9.8 m/S^2 and that on the moon is six times less than that on the earth's surface.

Given :

Mass = 900 kg

Value of acceleration due to gravity (g) = 9.8 m/sec^2

To find:

Weight on the surface of earth as well as on moon.

Solution:

We know that

weight = Mass × acceleration due to gravity

Weight on earth = 900 × 9.8

Weight on earth = 8820 N

________________________

Now acceleration due to gravity on moon = 1/6 × 9.8

= 9.8/6 m/sec^2

Weight on moon = Mass × Acceleration due to gravity on moon.

We know that mass remains constant everywhere in universe, so mass = 900 kg

Weight on moon = 900× 9.8/6

Weight on moon = 8820/6

Weight on moon = 1470 N

Mass is the amount of matter present inside a body. Its SI unit is Kilogram denoted by Kg.

Weight is the gravitational force exerted by a heavenly body on an object. Since it is a force , its SI unit is Newton denoted by N.

Anonymous: tq! but u hv made some mistakes in ur answer! its 8820 N and 1470 N.. correct it ☺✌
SillySam: ?? But when you'll multiply, the answer will come 882. 0 and 0 is of no use
Anonymous: dude, 900*9.8=8820✔
SillySam: oops gotcha :)
SillySam: thanks :)
Anonymous: tnx for the answer ☺
SillySam: My pleasure :)

Hi mate hope you would like it..

Solution::--

  • Mass of object on earth= mg

  • Hence weight = 900*9.81

=8829 N (On Earth)

Mass of object on moon= (1/6)*mg

= (1/6)*8829

=1471.5 N(On moon)
