HCl a gas at room temperature and HFa liquid. why is HCl a gas at room temperature and HF a liqid . Ans: Both HCl and HF are gases at room temperature. But HF has high boiling point than HCl because of the reason that in HF the strength of hydrogenbond is stronger than the strength ofhydrogen bond in HCl.

HF is a liquid but other hydrogen halides are gases at room temperature because strong attractive forces between H and F as compared to other halides.

Explanation:

  • HF is a diatomic molecule and due to high electronegativity of fluorine atom there occurs strong hydrogen bonding between hydrogen and fluorine atom. Due to which it forms a zig-zag structure at room temperature.
  • Therefore, HF exists in liquid state at room temperature. On the other hand, Cl, Br, and I have less electronegativity as compared to fluorine atom. As a result, there will be weak forces of interaction between HCl, HBr and HI.
  • Hence, except HF all other hydrogen halides exist in gaseous state at room temperature.
