participation is much more important that winning because by participating in some activity we learn more about ourselves .,our goods and bad our weakness and our good points .and we come to know where we stand in our eyes .Our confidence level rises and we are able to improve ourselves more. A feeling of competition builds up in our mind.We get ready to gain success.
One has to participate and and go through the race to learn, experience and improve performance. Who knows you could one day emerge as winner. Or if you have other skills you could change ur specailty and participate in other forms of sports that you are fit for. 

So that way one gets closer to success.
