Answer:

b) 863 m

Explanation:

Let

1. F be the minimum force required to move the ice block of mass M.

2. s be the distance travelled by the ice block.

3. W be work done against friction.

The ice block will start moving just as this force overcomes the frictional force between the two ice surfaces. Hence

F = f = μN, where N is the normal reaction

Balancing the forces along the direction perpendicular to the surfaces

N = Mg

Therefore

F = μMg ..........(1)

Work done by the person in moving the ice block for distance 's' is given by

W = F.s = μMgs .........(2)

Now, this work done against friction is converted into heat energy which provides the required Laten Heat to convert the ice into water. Hence

W = mL

or μΜgs = mL

or s = mL/μMg

s =  \frac{(15.2 \times  {10}^{ - 3} )(3.34 \times  {10}^{5} )}{0.06 \times 10 \times 9.81}

s = 862.52 meter

s = 863 m(approx)
