Larynx is also known as voice box. It is at the upper end of the windpipe. Two vocal cords are stretched across the voice box or larynx in such a way that it leaves a narrow slit between them for passage of air.When lungs force air through the slit, the vocal cords vibrate, producing sound.

The vocal folds are located within the larynx at the top of the trachea. They are attached posteriorly to the arytenoid cartilages, and anteriorly to the thyroid cartilage. Above both sides of the glottis are the two vestibular folds or false vocal folds which have a small sac between them.
