Hi friends please help me in this question :
Book : M.L. Aggarwal
Class: 9
Question 1:
A rectangular garden 10 m by 16 m is to be surrounded by a concrete walk of uniform width.Given that the area of the walk is 120 square metres, assuming the width of the walk to be x , form an equation in X and solve it to find the value of x.

Step-by-step explanation:

length of the rectangular garden=16m

breadth of the rectangular garden=10m

area of the rectangular garden=16x10

=160m

area of the concrete walk=120m

tatal area = area of the rectangular garden+area

of the concrete walk

=160+120

=280m

the concrete walk has uniform width (given)

therefore,

length of the whole rectangle (including concrete walk)=[16 + 2x]

breadth of the whole rectangle (including concrete walk)=[10+2x]

(16+2x)(10+2x)=280

4x*+ 52x +160-280=0

4x*+52x-120=0

dividing the whole equation by 4

x*+13x-30=0

x*+15x-2x -30=0

x(x+15)-2(x+15)=0

(x-2)(x+15)=0

x=2 or x= -15

as the width cannot be negative x=2

length of the outer rectangle =16+(2x2)

=16+4

=20m

breadth of the outer rectangle = 10+(2x2)

=10+4

=14m
