In the play, 'The Dear Departed', the poet strikes a sarcasm over the decreasing values of morals in the families and also on the increasing affinity of family members for money over relationships.
In this story, the daughters, Mrs. Slater and Mrs. Jordan are not at all sad over the supposed death of their father, Abel, instead they are more interested in whether he had paid premium for his insurance, or pinching his objects.
Through this story, the poet wants to convey that no amount of money surmounts the bonding of the family and hence we should try to get our love for our family and friends dominant over our love for some piece of paper.
