Aside from the obvious, teachers have a neat way of seeing the potential in students that others might not recognize.
As a kid, I really wanted to be a writer. I was 13 when I first submitted a short story to a US magazine for publication. It was turned down (kept the rejection letter for years).
My Mom, a teacher, encouraged me every way she could but, like, this is Mom…what did she know?
An English teacher in high school took note (said she) of my interest and skills. She encouraged me, worked with me, and at one point I went to her home once a week for one-on-one sessions. Her tutelage gave me the confidence I needed to work at improving my skills.
I bless and thank her, and her efforts, every time I sit down to write something.
