An antigen found on the surface of red blood cells. Red blood cells with the antigen are said to be Rh positive (Rh+). Those without the surface antigen are said to be Rh negative (Rh-). ... Rh stands for rhesus monkeys, in whose blood this antigen was first found.The terms Rh factor, Rh positive, and Rh negative refer to the Rh(D) antigen only.

In 1940, Landsteiner and Weiner discovered that apart from antigen A and B, another antigen discovered from Rhesus monkey, may be present on the surface of the RBCs in many people. This antigen was named as Rh-factor or Rhesus factor. The people (almost 85%- 90%) who possess the Rh-factor are called Rh+ and those who do not possess this factor are called Rh-
