Latent heat – It is the amount of heat released or absorbed by 1 mole of a substance during phase change at constant temperature. During phase change, a particular amount of heat is utilized by the particles of a substance to overcome interparticle attractive forces or a particular amount of heat is released to build up interparticle attraction forces. This heat energy is known as latent heat. For example: Molecules are separated by large distances when going from liquid to vapor, requiring significant energy to overcome molecular attraction. The same energy must be removed for condensation to take place.
