- There are many types of currents such as those driven by salinity, wind, temperature or the Coriolis effect. Two of the most commonly identified are surface currents and deep ocean currents. Surface currents are driven by winds, are fast and make up 10% of the world's oceans.
- Warm water is lighter and rises but the cold water is denser and sinks. This makes the difference in the levels of a sea. Warm equatorial water moves polewards along the surface while the cold water from the poles move along the bottom towards the equator.
- Ocean currents act as conveyer belts of warm and cold water, sending heat toward the polar regions and helping tropical areas cool off, thus influencing both weather and climate. ... Land areas also absorb some sunlight, and the atmosphere helps to retain heat that would otherwise quickly radiate into space after sunset.
- By moving heat from the equator toward the poles, ocean currents play an important role in controlling the climate. Ocean currents are also critically important to sea life. They carry nutrients and food to organisms that live permanently attached in one place, and carry reproductive cells and ocean life to new places.
- Wave height is determined by wind speed, the duration of time the wind has been blowing, fetch and by the depth and topography of the seafloor. A given wind speed has a matching practical limit over which time or distance will not produce larger waves.
