The features of the Gana sanghas or republics that existed in 600 - 100 BCE are :

1. Gana sanghas was also known as Gana Rajya developed in the eastern area of the subcontinent of India. The kingdom was a resolution on the border of the kingdom of India.

2. The word Gana came from the Sanskrit language which means a specific group of people.

3. One of the key characteristics of the gana sangha seems to include a monarch (king), and a deliberative assembly (sangha). Elected by the gana sangha, the monarch apparently always belonged to a family of the noble class of Kshatriya Varna.

4. The general body of the gana sanghas was either that of a single clan (e.g. Shakya), or a confederacy of clans. However, the smaller state of Shakyas and Koliyas, had the assembly open to all men, rich and poor.
